PLATINISED COPPER CORED TITANIUM ROD

Platinized titanium anodes are extensively used in electrolytic processes. They have successfully replaced lead anodes in electroplating applications due to their lower consumption, dimensional accuracy, ability to form precise deposit thicknesses on desired geometric shapes, predictable plating chemistry and ease of maintenance. These anodes can be designed and formed with various geometries based upon the parts to be electroplated.

Platinum on titanium anodes are highly preferred anodes for electrodeposition of copper, chromium, platinum, nickel, palladium and gold.

Platinized titanium anode by adopting thermal decomposition process to get a dense wear-resistant layer of platinum coating. The anode surface is modified to improve adhesion of platinum and to significantly improve uniformity of coating thickness, also reduce the coating porosity imparting greater acid resistance to the anode. This platinum coated titanium anode can be fabricated into bar, rod, sheet, mesh and other customized shape to meet your special needs.

Because of its high conductivity and low consumption rate, Platinum is an excellent anode material. Due to its high cost, Platinum is made practical for use by electroplating a thin layer over a high corrosion resistance substrate. Since Titanium, Niobium and Tantalum substrates have the ability to form an insulating oxide film under anodic conditions, they are commonly used as anode in ICCP (impressed current cathodic protection anode). Among them, Titanium is less expensive; however, it has a much lower breakdown potential than Niobium or Tantalum. The titanium oxide breaks down at anodic potentials in the 12 V range.

MMO (Mixed Metal Oxide) coated rubberized disc anodes are used to protect the ship or hull from sea water corrosion. Normally Titanium having noncorrosive, but it contains nonconductive material. MMO coated will give the conductivity in titanium as per the application and amperage. Zinc reference electrode will be placed in particular distance as per the cathodic protection system to monitor the conductivity of the MMO coating disc.   

Sea water is very corrosive environment because the salt present in it makes very good conductor of electricity. It creates a lot of free irons which accelerate oxidation of iron (mid steel) which made of oxidation.

When using MMO coated rubberized disc anode to protect the ship hull from sea water corrosion, external current are applied to convert high-potential anodic sites on a ship hulls to low-potential cathodic sites. This ensures the ship hull surface is protected from corrosion.

We can install MMO coated disc in the hull by passing DC current by a rectifier which will protect the ships life longer nearly 20 to 25 years depends upon the usage of the ship which afloat often.

For cathodic protection applications two primary electro catalysts are used:

1.         Ruthenium Oxide (RuO2)

Ruthenium oxide is the catalysts, should only be used in chlorinated environments (sea water). The catalytic life is significantly reduced when the primary reaction is the evolution of oxygen (fresh water, soil, coke backfill and concrete environments).

2.         Iridium Oxide (IrO2)

Most CP manufacturers use Iridium Oxide based mixed metal oxide for their cathodic protection anodes. The bulk oxides are typically a mixture of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) and Tantalum Oxide (TaO5). Their primary purpose is to provide an oxide film over the substrate material to prevent corrosion of the substrate.

Impressed Current Cathodic Protection systems are the ultimate solution for all corrosion problems to protect the metallic structure for long time and are recognized as a superior alternative to sacrificial anode systems which require frequent replacement. Impressed current cathodic protection systems are preferred by ship owners because they reduce fuel cost and maintenance.

ICCP (Impressed Current Cathodic Protection)anodes are controlled amount of DC current to submerged surfaces like underground oil wells using highly reliable mixed metal oxide anodes and zinc reference electrodes. This electrical current, constantly monitored and regulated by the system itself to prevent the electrochemical action of galvanic corrosion before it begins.

Platinized Titanium Rod are usually used in cantilever anode which is used for protecting pipeline internal, pump internal & condenser box internal for 30 years and more by applying DC current with transformer rectifier.

Normally titanium is well known for its high resistance to corrosion both water and chemical media. But titanium is the poor electricity conductor. So we use platinum/ MMO plating/Coating to increase the conductivity.
