The invention relates to the field of cathodic protection of reinforced concrete structures, and in particular to a design of discrete anode for cathodic protection suitable for being installed inside holes or slits made in the concrete. The anodes commonly used for the cathodic protection of reinforced concrete consist of a titanium substrate coated with transition metal oxides or other types of catalysts for anodic oxygen evolution.

CP coupons and soil corrosion probes (SCPs) can be effective tools in applying CP criteria under challenging operating environments, such as cross-bonded systems or in high resistivity soil environments.

CP coupons are used for measuring polarized ("off") or depolarized (100 mV) potentials on pipelines and other structures, and are useful in situations where these type of potentials cannot be measured easily. This is usually in situations such as cross-bonded systems or structures in fluenced by interference from CP systems not controlled by the main protected system operator, or if it is not practical to simultaneously switch off numerous sources of CP current connected to the pipeline being tested.

SCPs are used to measure the metal corrosion rate, and are connected to the structure so that they receive the same level of CP as the structure. Thus even if the measured potential reading on the structure is not at the minimum required level, the corrosion rate measurement (mils per year, or microns) can be used as an alternative criterion to asses CP effectiveness. Low levels of polarization in high resistivity soils, or erroneous potential readings due to poor soil contact are examples of situations where SCPs can be useful.

Cathodic protection is the most common electrochemical technique used to prevent corrosion on pipelines, storage tanks, ship hulls, underground tanks etc. The process occurs when a DC current is passed through an anode and cathode so that the metal becomes cathodic and prevents corrosion.

Cathodic protection is one of the main technique to prevent corrosion. Cathodic protection is of two types they are Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) and Galvanic Protection also known as DCCP. Cathodic protection systems protects a wide range of metallic structures in various environments.

Titanium tubular anodes are manufactured using titanium seamless tube and coated with platinum group precious metal mixed oxide coating.

Titanium tubular string for pipelines are arranged in ground beds either distributed or in a deep vertical hole depending on several design and field condition factors including current distribution requirements.

Mixed metal oxide based electro catalytic anodes are a different type of anodes when compared to conventional anodes. These anodes are dimensionally stable, long life anodes that are not consumed during the process of generating cathodic protection current.

Mixed Metal Oxide anodes are typically rated for a given output and life, for example 5 amps at 20 years. Within the normal range of current discharge for MMO anodes, this relationship is linear. The same 5 amp anode rated for 20 years of service would provide 40 years if only operated at 2.5 amps.

MMO piggyback anode is the flexible anode with a long life, which integrates the advantages of large current of MMO anode and excellent conductive performance. Due to its large current and small grounding resistance, it can be buried in the place far away from the anode structure.

Vessels, pipelines, condenser box and tanks which are used to store or transport liquids can also be protected from corrosion on their internal surfaces by the use of cathodic protection.  By passing the DC current through the cantilever which is coated with platinum or MMO (mixed metal oxide) the cathode will be protected and could be monitor by the reference electrodes.

REFERENCE ELECTRODE

A reference electrode must have specific electrical, physical and chemical properties. It must facilitate the measurement of accurate pipe/soil/reference electrode potentials on pipelines. It must ideally have a stability that is sustainable for years. For this to occur it should not be polarized by the very low electrical current that will flow in a measurement circuit. The potential should be measured with a high impedance multi-meter or voltmeter.

Reference electrode allows you to measure the potential of the working electrode without passing current through it while counter (auxiliary) electrode allows you to pass current. If oxidation occurs at the working electrode, reduction using the same magnitude of current is sustained at the counter electrode and hence there is no current flow between working and reference electrode(high input impedance) enabling us to follow changes in working electrode potential accurately. This is not possible in a two electrode system although we can get crude values by using certain types of electrodes which can act simultaneously as working and reference electrode.

Reference electrodes are generally implemented for the purpose of monitoring the anode in cathodic protection of buried or immersed metallic structures. It is made of high-purity of alloys, ensuring accuracy and stability of potential measurements.

The electrode frame is made of stainless steel, coated carbon steel or Rubber. The electrode can be designed to fix in the structure. By means of specifically designed supports.
